if this guy ever had feelings for you its usually beyond possible to get him "back." as for your friend she might have seemed more available or easy to date at the time so he took what was in front of him. i wish you would have gotten more clarification on his asking you out and then taking a relationship. thats not acceptable. however you dont know the circumstances so i would say get back onto flirty terms with him and see where it goes. just gradualy talk to him more and more.
