When does a married couple become self sufficient?

my wife and I are a married couple and we have been married for about 2 years now. at what point does a married couple become self sufficient and stop depending on their parents and/or family for financial help, etc. Would this be more of an issue dealing with being snobby, snooty, spoiled, or just the fact that you grew up in a certain way and its hard to change old habits? Or is this more of an issue that deals with the amount of income certain families have...for example, the richer you are or the better of you are, the more you are willing to give to your kids, etc.
